Pregnancy Exercises: The Role of Yoga

Pregnancy is the time when every woman is motivated since she wants to do the best for herself as well as the baby. In this way, even for women who have not exercised before, pregnancy is the time to start by beginning with simple ones with stretching, relaxation, meditation and deep breathing. Thus exercises relieve simple day-to-day problems of pregnancy but precautions should be taken not to be hard and fast on exercises. Since during the first trimester, maximum number of mis-carriages take place, it is important to be extra careful and start exercising from first trimester onwards. If the pregnancy is normal and the woman can do normal activities, exercises can be carried on until the time of childbirth. Exercises should be a combination of physical and relaxation kind.

During pregnancy, a gentle way of keeping active and agile is doing yoga. The magnificent effects of yoga asanas ensure a smooth pregnancy, natural childbirth and restoration of body shape after childbirth. It also does wonders on the physical and mental development of the fetus.

Yoga has five important tools for pregnancy.

Yoga exercises: At the subtle level, exercises ensure optimum blood supply and nutrients to the developing fetus and a relatively easy childbirth.

Pranayama: This gives abundant oxygen supply to the child.

Mudras and Bandas: They have powerful effect on the reproductive organs of the woman.

Meditation: Fears conflicts and trauma, which are so common during pregnancy, can be alleviated through meditation and it also brings an inexplicable bondage between the mother and the child.

Deep relaxation: Yogic sleep is very effective for childbirth preparation as it gives mental and physical relaxation.

Following these practices gives a delightful pregnancy and a chance for the best development of the child. Yogic exercises also help in relieving fluid retention, which is quite common in the last month. It also raises the level of energy and slows down the metabolism to restore calm. Pranayama also reduces nausea and mood swings quite prevalent during the first trimester. Even in postnatal care, yoga exercises restore the uterus abdomen and pelvic floor, relieving back tension and breast discomfort.

Women who have had frequent mis-carriages and bleeding during pregnancy and who have twins or low birth weight babies are advised not to exercise. Women with frequent backache feel relieved after exercises. Of all the exercises, walking for twenty to thirty minutes is the easiest and the best because it makes the blood flows right down evenly. But exercises need to be supervised and done in a controlled manner during pregnancy.

How To Treat Lower Back Pain And Depression With Iyengar Yoga! - New Study - Nurse's Report

If you're suffering from chronic lower back pain and are looking for exercises or some way to treat it without medications or want to find some way to get pain relief and quit taking any drugs, a new study may help you. The NIH, the National Institutes of Health, funded the study designed to compare pain medications with a particular style of yoga for treatment of lower back pain.

As you may know if you're having chronic pain or chronic lower back pain or any pain in the lower back it can cause you to be depressed. Depression just seems to go along with it and for good reason, but in this new study, depression is also relieved in the course of treatment.

The people in the study were divided into two groups. One group was taking the usual pain medications and the other group practicing yoga two times a week for about six months. The type of yoga was Iyengar. Created by using particular movements of the muscles Iyengar yoga focuses on body alignment. It differs from other styles of yoga because it uses wall ropes, chairs and blocks.

These supports are used to help support the body during postures, otherwise called asanas. They help decrease any pain in the muscles and joints. For people new to Iyengar yoga the supports make yoga easy to learn.

At the end of the six months, the people in the Iyengar yoga group had reduced pain and greater function and significantly reduced their symptoms of depression more so than those who took pain medications. And amazingly, after another six months after the study had ended they continued to reap the benefits!

Once you take a class in Iyengar yoga, you can do most of the postures at home with your own supports. If you've been suffering from chronic lower back pain, it's certainly worth a try. It's always good to find alternative treatments for chronic lower back pain to help reduce or stop pain medications if you're taking them and avoid possible dependence or addiction.

Iyengar yoga is easy to learn and can be done at home. In this study, just the twice a week sessions over the six months showed significant improvement so it's well worth the effort.

Why not try Iyengar yoga and experience the benefits yourself. Also, there is a lot you can do to reduce, diminish or stop chronic lower back pain besides medications and in addition to Iyengar yoga. Many have done it and no longer suffer. Make sure to check with your doctor, whether you know the cause of your pain or not, before starting any new exercise or treatment program. Think alternative treatments and treatments without drugs whenever you can to avoid the risks that all drugs bring.

The intense aerobic nature of the workout may make this style of Yoga difficult for beginners, but it also provides the most opportunity for body sculpting and muscle toning.

Core Yoga. A relatively new form of exercise-based Yoga, Core Yoga is designed to work on toning the abdominals, thighs and bottom. Many practitioners of Core Yoga use it as an addendum to their regular workout to target problem areas where weight can collect. Like other forms of Yoga, stretching and breath control are the focus of most exercises. This form of Yoga is also thought to help alleviate back pain, and many exercises originate from the spine. By actively participating in Core Yoga classes, you can expect to lose inches around your waist, bottom and hips.

Beginners Yoga. If you are new to Yoga, or uncertain whether your current level of fitness is up to an advanced Yoga routine, there are many beginning Yoga programs available on the market. Exploring Yoga for the first time can be an enlightening experience, and most beginners go on to more advanced levels once they are comfortable with the basics. Even beginner Yoga classes will emphasize muscle extension and breath control. Opting for an introduction to Yoga program can provide a low impact workout that will supplement the rest of your fitness workout.

Yoga in Fayetteville

Yoga, in Fayetteville, began at Breathing Space in January 2005. Lisa Lofthouse partnered with Charlotte Sessoms, a massage therapist, to provide a unique healing environment for the Fayetteville, North Carolina community. What began as a dream of providing yoga classes and massage therapy to a small number of clients, has grown into a healing arts center where a person can enjoy not only the unique abilities of three talented massage therapists, meditation instruction, stress management classes, and beginning this year, nutritional counseling.

All the healing modalities of Breathing Space meld together into a wonderful gift to the community. A person may come seeking yoga and end up taking a cooking class, getting a massage, or enjoying a workshop on breathing techniques. The staff at Breathing Space feel that once you walk in the door your needs will be met and if they are not, we will find a way to meet those needs.

The Fayetteville community has embraced yoga at Breathing Space. The classroom holds up to 10 students, and they may range in age from teenagers to seniors. Most students come seeking development and enrichment of body, mind, and spirit. Lisa Lofthouse and Evangelin Brodksy are both 500-hour Kripalu yoga professional level instructors. Lisa came to yoga from a business and fitness background and Evangelin found yoga through dance. Therefore, even though they were trained at Kripalu, their classes are unique and each brings her own life experiences into the yoga classroom.

Kripalu yoga teaches that all you seek and all you need are within you. Through various life experiences and the continued bombardment of external stimulation, most people seek peace outside of themselves, through walks in nature, going to the movies, reading books, etc. Through yoga, you learn to bring your awareness inward, to notice how the body moves when it breathes, how moving one arm or one wrist can be felt in the shoulder or back. When you learn to dive into inner awareness, even if it is simply noticing one breath, you learn to live in the present moment.

Kripalu yoga is a path of awareness, a path of inquiry into whom and what you really are and all that you have to offer to life. When you begin to bring your awareness to breath and movement, you begin to learn how thoughts and emotions are held in the body. This holding of thoughts and emotions creates tension and through the practice of postures and breath, tension is released and a sense of ease comes into the body. When the body is relaxed and at ease, the mind slows down creating a calmer, quieter lifestyle. So what you learn in a yoga class can be taken off the mat and into your everyday life.

When the body is put into various non-habitual movements and postures and the mind is taught to breathe through these types of tensions and to stay soft and centered, a habit of letting go and simply being develops and this can be carried into every aspect of life.

Lisa and Evangelin believe that the more people come to yoga the closer we will come to creating a more peaceful community right here in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Each person who comes to Breathing Space and is touched by the peace they find and has the ability to add peace and harmony to our community. One posture at a time, one massage at a time, one breath at a time can change the world.

Ayurvedic and Yoga Concept of Mental Diseases and Stress

Ayurveda is a "science of life and longevity", a traditional system of medicine of India which considers the mind to be one of the three pillars (tristhuna) on which life depends. The concept of mind (manas prakriti) is both broad and illuminating. Mind is built from different aspects. Buddhi, the intellect is the digestive system of the mind as it discriminates between different aspects of mental 'nutrition'. Manas is that which conceptualizes, analyzes and interacts between our inner sub consciousness and our experience of the outer world. Ahamkara is our 'I' maker and identity former that personalizes every experience. Tarpaka kapha relates to memory. Chitta that is considered to be consciousness and awareness. Prana connects these different aspects into antahakarana, the inner active.

It describes three primary qualities of mind or gunas as Sattwa, Rajas and Tamas. Satwa (equilibrium, evolution, intelligence) characterized by lightness, awareness, delight and lucidity, is pure, free from malady and cannot distorted and disturbed in any way. It activates the senses and is responsible for the perception of knowledge. Rajas (activity, agitation) which is most active of the gunas, characterizes motion and stimulation. All wants, wishes, aspirations and erratic-mindedness are a result of the effects of rajas guna. Tamas (inertia) which characterizes heaviness and immunity, produces disturbances in the process of perception (way one thinks) and activities of the mind. Hallucinations, laziness, apathy, sleepiness and drowsiness habits are due to it.

According to Ayurveda there are three fundamental mind types or mental doshas, called Vata, Pitta and Kapha, which embody different combinations of the five elements air, ether, fire, water and earth. Psychologically Vata governs feelings and emotions as freshness, nervousness, fear, anxiety, pain. Pitta arouses anger, hate, and jealousy. Kapha is responsible for the emotions of attachment, greed, and long-standing envyAyurvedic treatment aims to rebalance your doshas according to your constitution (also known as your Prakriti), resulting in a healthy body and sound mind.
Yoga is a Sanskrit (an ancient Indian language) word which means union of the mind, body and soul. It is an exercise in self-discipline which combines postures with breathing techniques and meditation. When regulary practised it strengthens nervous system, takes one to a deep state of relaxation and tranquility thereby helping people to face stressful situations more positively. The postures stretch limbs and exercises soothe muscles, organs and nervous system while the breathing technique helps to focus and relax at the same time and meditation ensures an overall feeling of well being resulting in a better management of stress.

The principle of yoga is that essential thoughts and messages are delivered more effectively when the body is relaxed and the brain is well-oxygenated, helping the body and mind to work more successfully while feeling less tired and less stressed.

Three main components of Yoga are Asanas, Pranayama and Dhyana

Asanas (Postures) :

Natural unblocking effected by yoga postures are helpful to relieve stress out of the individuals who carry a great deal of physical tension in their bodies. It is a form of a slow exercise together with a controlled breathing exercise which promotes a relaxed feeling or eases stress. Savasana, Makarasana, Balasana are few asanas to be practiced to relieve stress

Prayanama (A breathing technique) :

In this technique an individual do slow and steady breathing - like inhaling through his one nostril and exhaling through other. Besides there are fast breathing movements like intake of air through nostrils and exhaling through mouth at fast pace, this way air is passed properly through blood capillaries and the person feels himself in light mode and he feels that there is no burden over their mind and soul.

Dhyana (Meditation) :

A person sits in a posture usually in relaxing mode and concentrate his mind over one point with eyes closed. The mind is concentrated up to an extent when an individual feels that he has no interaction with the surroundings, in fact the mind reaches in a neutral stage thereby relieving mental exhaustion. Meditation restores the body to a calm state, helping the body to repair itself, and preventing damage due to the physical effects of stress

The hatha poses called "asanas", together with the breathing techniques ("pranayama") are done in a calm and meditative way. These emphasize purifying and strengthening the mind and body.

Iyengar yoga meanwhile achieves the common results of other known types but executes the poses in a precise body alignment. The meaning of the Yoga, for a right beginning

The purpose of all the different aspects of the practice of the Yoga is that to reason the Itself individual (Jiva) with the Absolute or pure awareness (Brahman).

The word Yoga literally means "union." This union frees the spirit from every sense of separation, from the illusion of the time, of the space and of the causality.

Only our ignorance, our incapability to distinguish the reality from the irreality that it prevents us from realizing our true nature. Also in this state of ignorance, the human spirit often perceives the lack of something in the life, something that cannot be reached neither with the realization of a determined objective neither with the satisfaction of a desire. In the life of each other, the incessant search of love, of success, of changes and of happiness are the demonstration that exists in us the conscience of a reality that we warn but that we are not able to reach.

According to the Yoga teaching, reality is for unchangeable and immovable definition and therefore the world, the universe that we perceive in constant movement, is not anything else other than illusion (maya).

The universe that we perceive is only something that overlaps to the reality, that is projected on the screen of the reality as a film it's projected on the screen of the cinema. As when we walk at night we can confuse a piece of rope with a snake, so, without illumination, we exchange what it is real with what it is not, we overlap or we project our illusions on the real world.

The deceptive nature of the temporal reality reflects him in the search from the modern science of the elementary particle, indivisible, of subject.

These searches have brought to the conclusion that the subject and the energy are interchangeable and that the appearance of solidity that we perceive in the subject is created from the movement or from the vibrations: we see to stir a helix and we exchange it for a circle.

Big part of what we perceive as solid it is, of fact, empty space: if we removed the whole space from the atoms that our body they form maintaining only the 'not-space', we would not even succeed in seeing what he has remained.

Yoga is a term sanscrito (from the root yuj or yug) with different meanings: to connect, to link, means used for the union, effort, method, practice, action, self-control, path to get what we don't have, what is obtainable through the knowledge and the practice, union of the individual soul with that supreme.

In the context of the Yoga philosophy, the union happens between the individual soul and the universal soul.

To begin the Yoga it is to know the way to maintain the equilibrium, the serenity, the calm, the self-control, the love; it is the tool to check it own destiny and all of our internal quality; it is To know that the simplicity and the to be satisfied damage the happiness; it is to know the correct way to use completely the strength of the thought and all the other cosmic energies.

A Real Runner's High: Integrating Running, Yoga and Meditation

We've all heard about, or even experienced ourselves, the Runner's High: a pleasant euphoria of endorphin-induced bliss. This is the exhilarating feeling of really taking care of our bodies, hearts and minds. Though the feeling is somewhat fleeting -- a few hours after the exercise session and the feeling wanes. Well, what if there were ways to extend that feeling, perhaps indefinitely, and maybe deepen it to become a more profound experience of happiness and joy? Many individuals are finding the combined disciplines of exercise, yoga asana, and meditation can lead to this result.

A little about each discipline: Any somewhat vigorous exercise will do, not just running. Running, however, is exceptionally convenient -- put on a pair of shoes and get out the door. It can be done in nearly any condition at any time. Trail running even gets you out into nature for a time, maybe offering a more fulfilling experience. The vigorous exercise improves many, many measurable conditions of our bodies; the result being a positive effect on our overall health and wellbeing.

Yoga is gaining significant interest in North America. As it does, the understanding of the practice is moving beyond just the physical postures. Yoga was originally practiced as a means to develop the body's potential for spiritual growth. Now it has been found that regular practice, like running, also has a profound effect on our health. The increase in flexibility, calmness and energy levels has the yoga community growing by leaps and bounds. It also has a significant positive impact on other physical exercise practices, allowing a more efficient creation of energy and greater enjoyment of any vigorous exercise.

Finally, meditation can be thought of as exercise for the mind. We in the States tend to focus on exercising the body, as the results are easily measured. But the mind is more vague in this respect. If we spend a half an hour meditating, have we made our minds stronger? If we do it properly, and with the same conviction of our physical practices, the experts will answer with a resounding 'yes'. Some even say the benefits last longer than physical exercise -- whereas the body will lose conditioning relatively quickly, the mind will retain the gains for an even longer time.

Yes, it's not only possible but proven too. As a matter of fact, leading heart scientists are noting the effects of "correct" respiration to their patients. The first question that comes to mind is - "How can I change my regular breathing process?" Well, astonishing as it may appear, it's true. By conditioning our body to breathe in a particular way, we re-program our involuntary system to adopt this new way of breathing.

The problem of long standing stresses begins in the ming and manifests initially only as psychological problems such as emotional, sleep disturbances, and difficulty in making decisions. Over the years this starts disturbing the internal organs and shows up as one of several of the digestive difficulties such as dyspepsia, flatulence etc., which are common signs of many stress induced disorders. As this continues for a few more years it shows up as new muscular-skeletal problems either as muscle spasms, sprains, or inflammations. A combination of several of these imbalances stays in one particular part\portion of the body appearing up as recurring problems with chronic with no noticeable cause. The point of Yoga (Cours de yoga à Paris) is spiritual development meant to create synergy in the body.

Is It Necessary To Wear Proper Yoga Clothes?

It is imperative to wear proper yoga clothes before doing yoga. Comfort is the keyword and whatever you wear should be such that it does not interfere with doing the poses or make you feel uncomfortable. Free-flowing robes are out and leotards are in. The material of the yoga clothes should also be such that it soaks up the perspiration and does not make you feel sore. Although there are no particular clothes which are a necessity to be worn while doing yoga, looking after the comfort aspect will make you do yoga with full concentration and ease of mind.

Which Fabric Should You Choose?

The range of fabrics used in the manufacture of yoga clothes is simply enormous. Starting with cotton, the material can also be as different as synthetics. You will be surprised to know that even hemp and bamboo are used to make the clothes. Depending on the environment in which you do yoga, the clothes will vary. However, in all cases, cotton is the popular choice because not only does it keep you cool but it also absorbs perspiration. You will feel happy to be in cotton shorts and a tank top as you can do the yoga poses easily.

You can wear the apparel according to the latest trends in the market. It is always the safer thing to do. But if you want to freak out, you can try something “different”. The colorful, glossy shirt you use for camping can be used as the yoga shirt and your warm-up pants as your yoga pants. In this way, you can experiment with other things as well.

What Does Tradition Say?

If you want to know about the traditional yoga clothes, then you have to understand that yoga was done by the yogis of yesteryear who wore free-flowing robes with a turban. These robes were loose-fitting and shapeless. But such types of clothes act as an impediment for doing yoga. They will tie you down and you might also unknowingly tear your outfit. With the advent of trendier clothes, you don’t have to worry about the traditional ones. The perfectly fitting clothes will help you to do yoga with peace of mind.

Overview

Yoga requires you to do a number of twists and turns. You have to also stretch your body in all directions. Unless you wear yoga clothes which are flexible, you will not be able to do the poses effectively. Therefore, perfectly fitting pants, tops or leotards are best for doing yoga. Ill-fitting or baggy clothes will only interfere with your doing yoga. You can make your clothes colorful to suit your mood. Simple clothes are better but you might try several designs if you want to. There are clothes for a person of any disposition. Even pregnant women can buy suitable yoga clothes. All you have to worry about is comfort. Whatever makes you feel content and happy is the perfect clothing for you.

The Benefit of Yoga Fight or Flight

Medical conditions can be vastly improved through the benefit of yoga. Yoga can lessen the negative effects of such conditions as lung disease, Parkinson's, insomnia, high blood pressure multiple sclerosis, and even joint pain. The benefit of yoga is being recognized today as a viable alternative not only by the yoga community, but also by many medical doctors.Medical conditions can be vastly improved through the benefit of yoga. Yoga can lessen the negative effects of such conditions as lung disease, Parkinson's, insomnia, high blood pressure multiple sclerosis, and even joint pain. The benefit of yoga is being recognized today as a viable alternative not only by the yoga community, but also by many medical doctors.
Stress is the leading cause in many illnesses today. An astonishing factor in today's world is noted by the Surgeon General who estimates that "80 percent of the people who die of non traumatic causes actually die of stress diseases". In this fast paced world, it is little wonder that people are turning to alternative solutions.
The use of the benefit of yoga is just one such solution. Since stress is developed in the mind, it is only natural that conditions such as depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, several auto-immune diseases, some types of diabetes mellitius, some cardio-vascular diseases, and irritable bowel syndrome would be at the forefront of human conditions and the quality of life today.
Outside stress is reflected in the reaction of our nervous system. The input stimuli, known as "Fight or flight" affects both our metabolism and well being. When faced with danger, whether real or imagined, the mind prepares the body for execution of one of these two conditions. Manifestation is in the form of increased heart rate, higher blood pressure, and the shutting down of unnecessary bodily functions, such as digestion. All systems are focused on one of two things - either "flight" or "fight." Breathing becomes shallow, muscles tense in anticipation of action, and blood flow to vital organs is decreased. The digestive and elimination process shuts down. This can be a good thing - our body is prepared to defend itself. However, problems arise when this condition is long term. The "flight or fight" scenario is only meant to be a very short-term event. One can see that long-term exposure to this situation will have very adverse effects on the body. Yoga can change that.
In nature, the countermeasure for "fight or flight" is known as the "relaxation response" or parasympathetic nervous system. The main nerves of the parasympathetic system are the tenth cranial nerves, or the vagus nerves. They originate in the medulla oblongata. Parasympathetic stimulation causes a slowing down of the heartbeat, lowering of blood pressure, increased blood flow to the skin and viscera, and peristalsis of the GI tract - the exact opposite of "fight or Flight" symptoms. Yoga induces this response by teaching the pupil to breathe deeply and relax muscles. The benefit of yoga is clear. The body recovers faster, and the harmful effects of stress are reduced.
Yoga subscribes to the theory that by using breathing and relaxation techniques, the harmful effects of stress on the body can be eliminated, or at the very least greatly reduced. Through meditation and calming of the spirit, yoga teaches us to face the situation of "fight or flight" from a threat to a challenge. One is able through practice to focus on finding a solution, rather than creating an immediate response to the stimuli. One learns to be proactive, and take care of the stressors in their lives.
The benefit of yoga is undeniable. By utilizing the techniques of this ancient practice, anyone can achieve the balance and harmony so needed in their lives. Remember, however, that just one thing is not the solution to all of life's problems. By combining yoga with the miracles of modern medicine and traditional healing remedies, the average person in today's world will enjoy a longer, happier life.

Kala Sarpa Yoga in Pakistan's horoscope disconcerting

All planets are hemmed in between the Nodes in Pak’s horoscope. This is not good, as it can unleash forces detrimental to Pak.

External and internal threats are indicated by Kala Sarpa Yoga. Clinging to blind ideologies, not bothering what the international community is thinking about Pak, all these can damage Pak.

Dogmatism is not good. There are no idolators, there are no disbelievers, there is no Jihad, there are no good people and bad people. Man is a composite creature and Good and Evil are in all men. All are human beings, not Hindus, Christians, Muslims or Jews. The Lord the God is One. We are all brothers and sisters, created by the One God. Love, as the Divine Attribute, is present in all human beings ! God, in His Timeless Eternity, uttered Himself as Love in all created beings, themselves capable of loving !

It is time Pak understood that it is more or less isolated. Gilani says we are not isolated, as China is with us. China will not support Pak when it comes to terrorism. No nation on earth will. You cannot simply go against the international community. There is a World Government in place, the UN. There is an International Criminal Court as well. The perpetrators of the Mumbai carnage should be tried before the I C C. Let Justice be done !

K S Y indicates that Pakistan is going through a critical phase, the most dangerous phase in its history. K S Y means that it has problems perennial. If Pak does not take the opinion of the international community and still believes in a Conspiracy Theory, then God save Pak !

With the Indian government talking tough, the chances of war has only increased.

Pak has just ignored the proof given by India about 26/11 and says that it is not enough proof !

Pak believes in the Conspiracy Theory that her enemies were behind the carnage. But Pak should know that outside Pak, nobody believes in the Conspiracy Theory.

Pakis are wondering why China did not veto banning the JuD ! China may not support Pak when it deals with terrorism !

Astrologically this is a bad time, with Jove and Venus weak. Our prayers are that the tension should not end in war !

Khuda Muhabbath hai - Love is God. Ishwar Prem Hai - Love is God!

We call upon all Jews, Christians, Muslims, Hindus to follow Love. War is not a solution !

We have been told to love our neighbours. Also our enemies.

The enemy is like you. He is a man with head, heart and conscience. He may be politically against you, but he is like you. Only political differences separate you from him.

If you say the enemy is base, he will retort that you are base. The solution is Love. Fight him and he will fight you. Love him and he will love you.

We call upon India, Pak to exercise Patience and not go to war. War means destruction. All will be losers !

This is the time to exercise prudence and restraint. Jupiter is in his state of deep depression and Venus, the planet of Love is weak.

Love is Expansion; Hatred is Contraction
Love is Life; Hatred is death.
Love is Positive; Hatred is Negative.

The greatest positive quality in the human bosom is Love !

Should You Be Doing Yoga

There are many misconceptions clouding the science of Yoga. People perceive it to be some kind of black or white magic, sorcery, physical or mental debauchery through which miraculous feats can be performed.

For some it is an extremely dangerous practice which should be limited to only those who have renounced the world. Few others think it to be a kind of mental and physical acrobatism that is compatible only to a Hindu mind.

Yoga had its origin in the wandering ascetics who sought the solitude of the forests to practice this ancient science and then imparted their knowledge to the ardent students (mumuksu) who lived in their ashrams. The ancient yogins were possessive about this art form and did not make any effort to popularize yoga.

The yogic postures and the subsequent stages of yoga were handed down only to the deserving students. Hence, this science remained limited to the confines of the forests or remote caves.Very little was known about this Vedic practice until the Yoga Institute of Santa Cruz, Mumbai was founded in 1918, which became India's oldest technical institute on Yoga.

Yoga is one of the most ancient cultural heritage of India. The word yoga in Sanskrit means "to unite", and so yoga can be said to connote a unitive discipline. In this sense it is an exercise in moral and mental cultivation that generates good health (arogya), contributes to longevity (chirayu), and the total intrinsic discipline culminates into positive and perennial happiness and peace.

Therefore, yoga is the said to be indispensable of the ultimate accomplishment in life. It is a science that affects not only the conscious self but the subconscious as well. It is a practical physiological training (kriya yoga), which if practiced can exalt man to the supra mundane level.

Yoga is an all-embracing way of life, a science of self-culture and mental discipline that ensures the purgation of the ignoble in man and brings forth what is most noble in him. It is pertinent to all people irrespective of his caste, creed, sex, and religion.

It can be beneficial to all the good and the bad, the sick and the healthy, the believer and the non-believer, the literate and the ignorant, the young and the old. A person may begin at any age and can go on reaping its benefits.

Yoga is more than a physical discipline of keeping fit. It's an ancient concept, and has a lot to do with the philosophical and the spiritual. So there're a lot of Yoga-related terms or types of yoga you'll come across. Don't get confused. Hatha Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, and Astanga Yoga are the most common disciplines of Yoga, which give you the strength, relaxation and flexibility the combined benefits one looks for. But there are various other disciplines and kinds of Yoga.

Scientists today ascertain that the intrinsic organic health of a human being is of prime importance along with the outer development of the body. The Similarities And Differences Of Pilates And Yoga

You can barely turn on the TV nowadays without hearing about Pilates or Yoga. When you take up a magazine, you are bound to find articles about these two exercise methods and it seems like everyone is doing either one or the other. What is all of the excitement about? Why are these techniques so special? What are the differences and similarities between Pilates and Yoga?
Yoga aims to unite the body, mind, and spirit. The person who aspires to do Yoga views that the body and mind are one. They believe that if the body is given the right tools and is taken to the proper environment then the body can find harmony and will be able to heal itself. Yoga is considered to be therapeutic. You will have a heightened awareness of your body's alignment, posture, and patterns of movement. Yoga tends to make your body more flexible and it will help you to relax even if you are in the middle of a stress stricken environment. Therefore, one of the most important reasons as to why people start practicing Yoga is that they want to feel more energetic, be more happy, feel more fit and be at peace.
One performs Yoga mainly in a group setting on a special Yoga mat with the help of a Yoga instructor. You use your body's own weight for resistance. You must also focus a great deal of your attention to the flow from one posture into that of another. Yoga styles are varied and there is not one style that is considered to be better than another. These styles also vary in their emphasis, and the style you choose is a matter of personal preference.
Pilates also seeks to reach many of the same goals as does Yoga by way of a series of movements that are very controlled. The major difference between Pilates and Yoga is that while doing Pilates exercises not only makes use of a mat, but it also incorporates work on different Pilates machines. The main thrust of the Pilates exercises is to improve posture, strengthen the abdominal muscles, improve balance, lengthen and stabilize the spine and improve overall strength. Pilates will tend to give you a leaner, longer, dancer-like line.
A Whole Body Workout
Unlike a variety of other training programs, Pilates makes an effort to work the whole body and places its emphasis on precision, control, and concentration in both the body as well as the mind. There is no attempt made at doing many repetitions at a time in a rapid, haphazard fashion. Instead, the focus is placed on quality and not the amount of reps you do. The "powerhouse" that consists of the lower back, abdominal muscles and the buttocks are at the center of all movement and this allows the rest of your body to move fluidly and freely. When one focuses on core stabilization, it makes the student stronger from the inside out. This is critical for the advancement of the Pilates student. Pilates is low impact by nature and, therefore, it is ideal for the prevention of injury and for rehabilitation. Pilates has six guiding principles - concentration, centering, flow, control, breathing and precision. These principles train the body to move more efficiently while placing minimal impact on the body. With Pilates, there is a definite balance between flexibility and strength that creates a vigorous, symmetrical and health workout for all of the different muscle groups, which will result in a more balanced, leaner, and stronger body.

Real Yoga: Voyage Into The Self!

Yoga has become an interesting fitness trend in America. Incidentally, Yoga can be an excellent way to get in shape, lose weight, etc. If this is all you do with Yoga, though, you are missing quite a bit.

Yoga is another method of contacting and expressing the self through the body. If you pay attention, going through these exercises will give you a chance to become more familiar with your body. When you learn to maintain a state of deep focus (through Yoga or any other exercise), you will begin to gain deeper and deeper insights. Properly focused Yoga practice will not only make your body more limber, it will also create greater flexibility of perception. Increasing flexibility of perception is how we start to open the doors to true freedom!

So how do we use our focus to deepen our Yoga practice? There are a variety of methods, but I will give you three to start with. To have a deeper experience while practicing Yoga, you can focus on the muscles being stretched, the breath, or the feet.

Focusing on the muscles being stretched is very powerful. As you relax into the posture, you can smile into these muscles, and deepen the stretch. Sometimes (particularly for beginners) focusing on the active muscles seems to amplify discomfort. If this is the case, then you can loosen your focus to the general area of the stretch, or choose one of the other objects of focus.

Focusing on the breath is a classic meditation as well as an excellent method of deepening your practice of Yoga. Breath-work in Yoga is typically referred to as Pranayama. If you are doing a Yoga workout, switching asanas (positions) to work up a sweat, the best thing to do is mindful diaphragmatic breathing. Breathe deep into the belly and pay attention to the sensations that arise in conjunction with the breath. If you are holding a single asana for an extended period of time, you can use the same breathing method, or you can play with the breath of fire. The breath of fire is rapid diaphragmatic breathing; see if you can use your abdominal muscles to draw in a deep (not long) breath and exhale the breath quickly. Start slowly with the breath of fire, and add speed as you grow more comfortable.

The final point of focus that we will cover for Yoga practice is the feet. Focusing on the feet has a very grounding effect; it reminds you of your connection to the Earth. If any of the other methods are too uncomfortable, or if you find yourself getting distracted, you can always bring your focus back to your feet. Pay attention to your feet, and how you connect with the Earth as you transition through asanas.

Regardless of which point of focus you choose, you will gradually develop more and more mindfulness. This can transform your experience of Yoga. One of the many benefits of having an active meditation (Yoga, a martial art, walking meditation, etc.), is how easy it is to bring it into the rest of your life. Still meditation (sitting or standing) is also very useful, but the state of insight gained there is a bit more difficult to carry into your day-to-day routine.

Yoga is a powerful method for health and growth. As you develop your focus and insight in your Yoga practice, you will be able to enjoy more insight and awareness in every moment of every day!

How to Choose a Yoga Mat - The Best Way

Searching for the perfect yoga mat? You will find that while there are a wide variety of mats available on the market, the "best" mat is the one that meets your needs.

The first thing you will want to look for in a yoga mat is a size that works best for you. Most yoga mats average around 24 inches wide, but lengths can vary widely. Lengths of 68" and 72" are fairly common, but yoga mats can typically range from 60" to 75" in length. A shorter mat may be appropriate for kids, people with smaller frames, or in situations where portability is important. A longer mat will allow you to perform a wider variety of poses more easily. For instance, it is nicer to have your face on a mat than on the floor in a Chattaranga pose!

Second, consider the material. You will want a material that provides good thickness, traction, and holds up over time. Cheap yoga mats are often made out of PVC and plastic materials. These are the least environmentally-friendly option, and you may not want to be in close contact with the compounds and fumes they release while practicing yoga. A newer development is the introduction of TPE (Thermal Plastic Elastomer) yoga mats. These are a good tradeoff between cost and eco-consciousness. While they are still relatively inexpensive, they are made from a more environmentally-friendly material that is recyclable. Some of the best yoga mats are made from natural latex and organic natural latex. The latter is usually the most eco-friendly yoga mat choice. Manufacturers of natural latex mats often have environmental offset programs to counter the manufacturing and shipping impact of the mat.

Third, consider the cost. While cost is imporant, don't get fooled by the false economy of cheap low-quality mats. A single high-quality yoga mat that provides you with productive practice sessions is worth way more than a slightly cheaper mat. Furthermore, a high-quality mat will last longer than a series of cheaper mats that need to be replaced on a regular basis. In short, buy the best yoga mat that you can afford.
